Taking a Seat with Niels Otto Møller

What's behind a designer classic? A timeless object, standing quality and trends through generations? Those are some of the questions we ask when searching for the right items to furnish our home in a sustainable and long-lasting way.

The danish craftsman Niels Otto Møller was the designer behind some of today's most sought after chairs. His designs inspire and intrigue us. How can something as simple be so alluring? You can see that Møller follows the Danish ethos. That beauty is found by simplifying and stripping away ornamentation rather than adding it, relying on the craftsmanship, materials, form, and skill of their hand.

N.O. Møller's path to becoming a design legend began in 1939, when he started the education as a cabinet maker, followed by further studies at the Aarhus School of Design. The knowledge helped him build an excellent method. However, the real look and feel of his design where achieved through the choice of materials and the eloquent curves that highlighted his craftsmanship. In 1944, he founded his proper furniture factory named after his dad JL Møller. The manufacturer still exists and is presently run by the artist's family. Throughout the years, the company has received prestigious rewards such as the Danish Furniture Prize.

To acquire a Møller chair is like holding a beautiful piece of history. Right after the convulsive middle of the century, specifically in 1951, Møller produced some of his most widely known designs; the No. 71 and No. 78 chairs. These chairs strongly represent the Scandinavian mid-century modern vision of practical yet well-made design. Transcendence is not a coincidence. Møller was highly engaged to his materials and knew how to sculpt and obtain the very best of teak, rosewood, oak, black upholstery, corded woven and paper cord seats.

Chairs, chairs, and more chairs, but lucky for us Niels Otto Møller's talent does not end there. His portfolio includes dinner tables, cabinets, and ottomans. All the above are representative, quality pieces appreciated to date and living treasures of design. We have put together a selection of our vintage Møller favourites and are excited to get to know your preferences. N. O. Møller's talent is evident to the eye, but not many have been fortunate enough to confirm it with the other senses. So please, give yourself the chance to take a seat and enjoy.
